Womb to World - Ayurvedic Care for Mama’s Postpartum Restoration

Becoming a mother is an extraordinary journey, one that transforms your body, mind, and spirit in ways you might never have imagined. But while holding your newborn can fill your heart, your postpartum body can feel like unfamiliar territory.

For so many women, after a couple of months after birth, the hair that felt so incredibly thick during pregnancy starts to shed. Sometimes it lets go of one or two strands more than usual, sometimes it feels like handfuls in the shower, and that is cause for anxiety.

But we understand it’s not just the hair that’s falling, sometimes it feels like a little bit of your confidence is going too. You’ve already been through sleepless nights, body changes, and the constant learning curve of caring for a newborn.

But the good news is, for most, this postpartum hair loss is temporary. The better news: you can support recovery in clear, natural ayurvedic ways. Ayurveda paves the way from reviving your internal imbalance to helping hair grow stronger from its root.

What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

  • During pregnancy, your body makes lots of oestrogen. That keeps more hair in the growth phase, so hair looks fuller. After birth, oestrogen drops and many hairs move into the shedding phase at once. This is called telogen effluvium. Typically:

      Starts 2–4 months after delivery.

Peaks around the 4–5 month mark.

Resolves naturally within 6–12 months for most women.

Other things that make shedding worse:

Stress and sleep loss that is very common with a new baby.

Nutrient gaps like iron, zinc, protein, and some vitamins can be low after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Physical strain from labour and birth.

Thyroid issues can also be the reason. Sometimes the thyroid changes after pregnancy and can affect hair.

How Does Ayurveda Explain Postpartum Changes?

If you’ve never heard of Ayurveda, think of it as a traditional wellness system that focuses on natural remedies and treats the whole person: body, mind and routine. It uses food, herbs, oil, massage and lifestyle to restore balance, which you deserve right now.

Three main ideas to know:

      Doshas

Three energies are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Everyone has all three, but one or two tend to be dominant. Problems happen when a dosha is too high or too low.

      Ojas

The body’s vital energy and resilience. When Ojas is low, you feel tired and healing slows.

      Dhatus

Tissues in the body (blood, muscle, fat, bone, etc.). Hair is supported by the deeper dhatus, if they are weak, hair suffers.

After birth, Vata tends to increase. Vata is linked to movement and dryness; when it’s high, you get brittle hair, dryness and more shedding. So Ayurveda aims to calm Vata, rebuild Ojas, and nourish the tissues that feed hair.

How Ayurveda Addresses Postpartum Hair Loss Practically?

In Ayurveda, postpartum care falls under the Sutika Paricharya, the traditional regimen for new mothers.

According to Ayurvedic tradition, a new mother requires 40 days of specialised care focusing on nourishment, rest, and gentle rejuvenation to restore balance and prevent long-term health issues. This includes hair health, which is considered an outward reflection of your internal vitality.

Ayurveda sees postpartum recovery not just as a biological adjustment, but as a period where the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are especially vulnerable to imbalance. Ayurveda uses three linked approaches:

Rebuild from the inside (food and herbs)

Eat warm, nourishing meals that are easy to digest. Think stews, porridges, soups, lentils and cooked vegetables.

Include good protein, iron and healthy fats, eggs (if taken), lentils, oily fish, nuts, seeds, and ghee.

Herbs and foods traditionally used, Amla (Indian gooseberry) for vitamin C and antioxidant support, Bhringraj for hair; Fenugreek for scalp health. These can be used in food, teas or oils.

2. External nourishment (oil and scalp care)

Regular warm scalp oiling improves circulation, reduces dryness and delivers plant nutrients directly to the root area. In Ayurveda, this is called Shiro Abhyanga (head oil massage).

Oils calm Vata and help rebuild the scalp environment so new hairs can grow stronger.

3. Restore rest and reduce stress

Gentle breathing, short restorative naps, light postnatal yoga and asking for help are all part of recovery. Reducing cortisol (stress hormone) helps the hair cycle normalise faster.

Ayurvedic goal: Heal from the inside out so the body can support healthy, strong hair regrowth.

Which Herbs Help with Postpartum Hair Regrowth?

Ayurveda has used herbal oils for postpartum hair loss recovery for a long time. Rosemary oil is one of those and now it is also recognised for hair benefits backed by research.

There was a major study in 2015 that compared rosemary oil to minoxidil, which is the active ingredient in Regaine, a well-known hair loss treatment. The results showed that after six months, rosemary oil was just as effective at increasing hair count. The best part? The rosemary oil group had fewer issues with an itchy scalp, which is a common side effect of minoxidil. This suggests it's a powerful and gentler alternative.

When it is mixed with Ayurvedic herbs like Amla and Bhringraj and carrier oils such as Organic Coconut or Castor, it becomes a treatment that works for both Ayurvedic goals like calming Vata and rebuilding Ojas, and modern scalp care.

Studies show rosemary oil can improve scalp circulation, support follicle activity, and reduce inflammation without harsh side effects.
