Ayumi Ayurvedic Care for Itchy Scalp
An itchy scalp usually starts as a mild niggle and gets worse through the day, and the more you scratch, the more irritated it feels. Our itchy scalp products bring together Ayurvedic herbs such as neem, tulsi and tea tree in a simple wash-day routine. Our Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is an itchy scalp shampoo with tea tree, neem, moringa and nettle, and our Anti-Dandruff Scalp Conditioner is an itchy scalp conditioner with the same herbs. For a pre-wash itchy scalp treatment, our Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is a clinically proven oil for itchy scalp with neem, rosemary and tulsi, and our Bio Active Scalp Oil is a gentler itchy scalp oil for an itchy scalp that feels tight rather than flaky.
What Causes Itchy Scalp? Why Is My Scalp Itchy?
Knowing what causes itchy scalp helps you choose the right products and itchy scalp remedies. Most people find one or two of these apply.
- Dandruff. A yeast called Malassezia lives on everyone's scalp. In some people it leads to flaking and an itchy scalp. See our dandruff products if flakes are your main concern.
- Product build-up. Styling products and conditioner that are not fully rinsed out can sit on the scalp and make it itch.
- Dryness. A scalp that has lost moisture can feel tight and itch even without flakes. This is the most common reason for an itchy scalp no dandruff search. Our dry scalp products are made for it.
- Hard water and hot showers. Much of England has hard water, and hot water washes away the scalp's natural oils. Both can leave the scalp feeling tight and itchy.
- Itchy scalp at night. An itchy scalp at night is common. The scalp is warmer under the covers, and with fewer distractions you notice the itch more.
- Sweat and heat. Sweat left on the scalp after exercise, or under a hat, can make it itch.
- Contact irritation. New shampoos, hair dyes and styling products can trigger itching. If a new itch started with a new product, try stopping that product first.
- When to see your GP. If your scalp is sore, red, weeping or has raised patches, or you are losing hair, see your GP or a trichologist before trying a new product.

Why Choose Our Itchy Scalp Products
- Tested. Our Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is clinically proven. Our itchy scalp shampoo, conditioner and Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil were also each tested in a lab against Malassezia furfur, a yeast linked to dandruff, and the Bio Active Scalp Oil is lab tested.
- Pre-wash oils. Both scalp oils go on before you wash and come out with your shampoo, so nothing is left sitting on the scalp between washes. Each works as an ayurvedic scalp treatment you can use at home.
- Choices for flaky or tight scalps. The Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is for an itchy scalp with flakes. The Bio Active Scalp Oil is for a scalp that feels tight without flaking.
- Cold-pressed oils, no mineral oil. Every plant oil we use is cold pressed, on its own or in a blend, and we don't use mineral oil.
- PETA certified, vegan and cruelty-free. Every product in the range is PETA certified, vegan, cruelty-free and made in the UK.
Home Remedies for Itchy Scalp
These home remedies for itchy scalp cost little or nothing, and they work alongside any natural itchy scalp treatment. For many people they bring real scalp itch relief.
- Oil before you wash. Massage a scalp oil into the scalp and leave it for at least 30 minutes, or overnight, then shampoo.
- Rinse thoroughly. Make sure no shampoo, conditioner or styling product is left on the scalp.
- Keep conditioner off the scalp. Apply it from the mid-lengths to the ends only.
- Turn the temperature down. Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water, and rinse with cool or lukewarm water.
- Try not to scratch. Scratching irritates the scalp further. If you feel the urge, press a cool, damp cloth on the spot instead.
- Wash after sweating. Rinse your scalp after exercise so sweat doesn't sit on the skin.

What to Look for in Itchy Scalp Products
- Herbs suited to the itch. For an itchy scalp with flakes, look for neem and tea tree. For a scalp that feels tight, look for soothing herbs such as tulsi and centella.
- A shampoo made for the scalp. Massage an itchy scalp shampoo into the scalp itself so it can lift oil and build-up. A soothing scalp shampoo works best used this way.
- A pre-wash oil. An oil for itchy scalp that goes on before you wash has time to work, then rinses out, so it won't build up.
- Lab testing. Look for itchy scalp products that have been tested. Ours have, with results you can read on each product page.
- Realistic claims. Itchy scalp remedies can ease discomfort, but they can't treat skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema. See your GP if the itch doesn't settle.
Itchy Scalp Care for UK Conditions
- Hard water. In hard-water areas, rinse thoroughly after every wash so no residue is left on the scalp.
- Central heating. From October to March, dry indoor air can make an itchy scalp worse. Add an extra pre-wash oil each week over winter.
- Hats and scarves. Wash winter hats and scarves regularly, as they collect sweat and product residue against the scalp.
- Winter showers. Keep showers warm rather than hot, and finish with a cool or lukewarm rinse.
