A flaky, itchy scalp is rarely just cosmetic. It's usually the visible sign of a yeast overgrowth, and most dandruff treatments manage what you can see rather than what's causing it.
This is a pre-wash anti-dandruff treatment, lab-tested to reduce Malassezia furfur, the yeast behind dandruff, by 99.73%. Neem, Tulsi and Centella go on before you shampoo, sit on the scalp where the yeast actually lives, and get washed away with the softened flakes.
No zinc pyrithione. No selenium sulphide. No coal tar. A natural dandruff treatment that holds up to testing.
- Lab tested: reduces dandruff yeast by 99.73%
- Visibly reduces flakes and calms itching
- Clears build-up that feeds flaking
- Comforts scalps stripped by medicated shampoos
- Neem, Tulsi and Centella, working before the wash

Active Ingredients
Neem
The scalp ingredient Ayurveda is best known for, and the reason this formula works on dandruff rather than just dryness. Neem leaf extract helps keep the scalp clean and comfortable, and its pairing with Rosemary has been studied specifically for anti-dandruff activity.
Tulsi
Holy basil, one of the most revered plants in Ayurvedic practice. Helps soothe the sensation of dryness and itching that comes with a flaking scalp.
Centella (Gotu Kola)
The concentration ingredient. Centella has been studied extensively for its effect on the skin barrier, which matters on a scalp that's been scratched, stripped or left reactive by medicated products.
Fenugreek and Shikakai
Two traditional Ayurvedic scalp botanicals. Fenugreek has long been used on flaking scalps, and Shikakai for gentle cleansing before the shampoo arrives.
Rosemary oil
Fresh and clarifying, and the partner to Neem. Published research on the two combined found the pairing effective against Malassezia furfur, which is why they sit together here rather than separately.
Benefits
Works Where the Yeast Lives
Dandruff starts on the scalp, not in the hair, and most products spend under a minute there before being rinsed. A pre-wash oil sits for thirty minutes or overnight. That contact time is why the lab result is what it is.Softens Flakes Instead of Scrubbing Them
Dry flakes cling. Scratching and scrubbing at them irritates the scalp further, which is how people end up in a cycle. Oiling first loosens them so the shampoo lifts them away cleanly.A Natural Dandruff Treatment That's Been Tested
Plenty of natural products make claims. This one holds an independent GLP-compliant lab result showing 99.73% reduction of the yeast behind dandruff, alongside peer-reviewed research on Neem, Rosemary and Centella. Traditional ingredients, modern evidence. When Medicated Shampoos Leave Your Scalp Feeling Tight
Zinc pyrithione, selenium sulphide and coal tar all do a job. But they can leave your scalp dry and uncomfortable, and quite a few people would rather avoid them altogether. There's none of any of them in this bottle. Instead, Sesame, Sweet Almond and Avocado carry the actives in and replenish the scalp while they're at it.The Case for Oiling Before You Wash
Oiling the scalp before cleansing has been practised for centuries, and the logic still holds. It replenishes the skin before the shampoo strips it, rather than trying to put moisture back afterwards. Thirty minutes will do, or leave it overnight for something more intensive. How to Use
1. Section your hair. Divide into sections so the oil reaches the scalp evenly rather than sitting on the lengths.
2. Apply directly to the scalp. Use the dropper or fingertips, focusing on areas where flakes and itching are worst.
3. Massage for five minutes. Fingertips, not nails. Small circular movements across the whole scalp.
4. Leave it on. Thirty minutes minimum, one to two hours is better, overnight for stubborn flaking. Use an old pillowcase.
5. Shampoo out thoroughly. Apply Ayumi Anti-Dandruff Shampoo to dry, oiled hair first, then add water and lather. That makes the oil far easier to rinse. Follow with the conditioner on the lengths.
Use two to three times weekly.

Scientific Evidence & Quality Assurance
Ayumi Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is supported by an independent GLP-compliant laboratory antimicrobial test alongside peer-reviewed research on the formula's key Ayurvedic actives — Neem, Rosemary and Centella asiatica.
Study 1 — GLP-Compliant Laboratory Antimicrobial Test — Malassezia furfur (CCFT, MIET, 2024)
In vitro antimicrobial study commissioned to evaluate the log reduction efficacy of Ayumi Scalp & Hair Oil against Malassezia furfur — the yeast scientifically linked to dandruff. Conducted at the Centre for Cruelty-Free Testing (CCFT), Meerut Institute of Engineering & Technology — a FIST Centre sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. The study followed OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practices [C(97) 186/Final] with no deviations from FDA GLP Regulations (21 CFR, Part 58). Method: log reduction with neutralisation, 10-second contact time, OD600 + colony counting on Mueller-Hinton agar. Result: at the 25% test dilution, % Recovery = 0.27%, giving a % Reduction of 99.73% — equivalent to ~3 Log Reduction (industry-standard microbiology benchmark for high antimicrobial efficacy).

Study 2 — Rosemary & Neem Combined Anti-Dandruff Efficacy (Idris et al., 2024)
Peer-reviewed research published in Nature Scientific Reports investigating the combined antimicrobial activity of rosemary and neem extracts. The study demonstrated that the combined extract showed superior efficacy against Malassezia furfur (a causative agent of dandruff) and Trichophyton rubrum (associated with scalp disorders) compared to the conventional antifungal agent ketoconazole — directly supporting Ayumi's pairing of Neem with Rosemary in this formulation.

Study 3 — Centella asiatica Skin Barrier & Wound Healing (Arribas-López et al., 2022)
Systematic review of clinical trials evaluating Centella asiatica's effects on skin healing and barrier function. The review concluded that C. asiatica enhances tissue repair through stimulation of collagen I, FGF and VEGF production, supports microcirculation and reduces inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα). These mechanisms underpin Centella's role in soothing inflamed, irritated dandruff-prone scalps and supporting barrier recovery.

FAQ
What's the difference between dandruff and dry scalp?
Dry scalp gives fine, powdery flakes and skin that feels tight, usually worse in winter or after over-washing. Dandruff gives larger, slightly oily flakes, often yellowish, and an itch without the tightness.
The cause is different too. Dry scalp is a moisture problem. Dandruff is driven by Malassezia furfur, a yeast that lives on everyone's skin and feeds on the oils your scalp produces. Plenty of people have both, which is why the flakes don't always look consistent.
Can dandruff cause hair loss?
What does cause damage is constant scratching, so it's worth calming the itch rather than living with it. If you're noticing hair loss alongside the flaking, have a word with your GP rather than assuming the two are connected.
Why is my scalp sore?
A pre-wash oil replenishes it rather than cleaning it again, which is the opposite of what most people reach for when their scalp hurts.
Is rosemary oil good for dandruff?
That's why the two sit together in this formula rather than separately. Rosemary also keeps a rich oil feeling light, which matters when it's going on your scalp for an hour.
Is coconut oil good for dandruff?
Neem has the research behind it. Coconut mostly has the reputation.
Does oiling your scalp help dandruff?
Ours reduced the yeast behind dandruff by 99.73% in independent laboratory testing.
How do you get rid of dandruff naturally?
The routine stops the moment the scalp looks clear, and the flaking returns a fortnight later.
Can I use this instead of a medicated shampoo?
If you have a diagnosed scalp condition or you're using something prescribed, check with your GP or pharmacist before changing anything.
