Spend 10 minutes searching for black seed oil, and you'll come away thinking it cures just about everything: cancer, diabetes, baldness, allergies, and the lot. Somebody on the internet is confident about all of it.
We sell the stuff, so you'd expect us to nod along. We'd rather not. The honest position is more interesting anyway: black seed oil has been studied more than most traditional remedies; some of those studies found real things, and quite a lot of what gets claimed online isn't in them.
So here's what the research has looked at, what it found, and (the part usually left out) how confident anyone should be about it.
First, what is black seed oil?
Black seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, a small flowering plant with pale blue-white petals native to Western Asia and widely cultivated across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. It's in the buttercup family, which surprises people.
The seeds turn up under a confusing number of names. Black cumin. Black caraway. Kalonji, if you grew up in a South Asian kitchen. Habbat al-barakah (the blessed seed) across the Arabic-speaking world. They're the same plant, and it's related to neither cumin nor caraway. The names stuck because the seeds look similar in a jar.
You'll have eaten them without thinking. They're the little black seeds on naan.
Why how it's pressed changes what you get.
The oil can be extracted in two ways. Cold pressing mechanically squeezes the seed; no heat is involved. Solvent extraction uses a solvent, usually hexane, to strip the oil out, then evaporates it off.
Extraction and refining methods can affect an oil's colour, flavour, volatile compounds and thymoquinone content. That means two products labelled Nigella sativa oil can have very different chemical profiles.
Research on Nigella sativa uses different preparations, including seed powder, oil, extracts and isolated thymoquinone. Findings, therefore, need to be interpreted in the context of the specific preparation and dose studied, rather than assumed to apply equally to every bottle of black seed oil.
Thymoquinone: the compound behind most of the interest
Thymoquinone is the constituent that has attracted the most research attention. Researchers often isolate and measure it, and it contributes to the oil's characteristic sharp flavour and aroma.
Thymoquinone content can vary considerably between black seed oils, and many brands do not publish a tested percentage. That makes batch testing useful when you want to compare what is actually in the bottle.
Two bottles labelled identically can differ fivefold in the compound under study. So when someone tells you a study found black seed oil did something, the reasonable follow-up is, 'Which black seed oil, and how much thymoquinone was in it?'

What researchers have studied
Nigella sativa has been through a fair number of human trials. Below is what those trials looked at and what they found, with the caveats attached, not buried.
One thing worth saying upfront: most of these studies are small: sixty people, ninety people, occasionally a couple of hundred. Most run for eight to twelve weeks. A meaningful share comes from a handful of research groups in a handful of countries. That does not make them worthless, but it's a long way from the evidence base behind, say, a statin.

Blood pressure
This is probably the most consistent finding. Several meta-analyses pooling small trials have found modest reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people taking Nigella sativa, typically a few millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
A few points are real but small. It's the sort of change you'd also get from losing a bit of weight or cutting down on salt, and it isn't a substitute for medication if you've been prescribed any. If you're already on blood pressure medication, this is a reason to talk to your GP before starting, not a reason to stop taking anything.

Blood sugar and metabolic markers
Trials in people with type 2 diabetes have measured fasting glucose and HbA1c, and pooled analyses have found improvements in both. The effect sizes vary widely across studies, which usually signals that something differs among them (dose, preparation, duration, or the population) rather than a clean, reliable effect.
The same caution applies more strongly. If you take diabetes medication, black seed oil may interact with it. That's a conversation with your GP or pharmacist.

Cholesterol and blood lipids
Meta-analyses have reported reductions in total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The findings are reasonably consistent in direction, though again the trials are short and the effect sizes modest.

Respiratory symptoms
Some of the more interesting work has been in asthma, where Nigella sativa has been trialled alongside standard treatment rather than as a replacement. Studies have measured symptom scores and lung function, with some reporting improvement in symptom questionnaires.
The important word there is alongside. Nobody has shown that this replaces an inhaler, and nobody should try to find out on their own.

Skin and scalp, applied topically
Topical research is a distinct body of literature and, in some ways, a cleaner one. You can see skin change in a way you can't see cholesterol change. Small studies have compared Nigella sativa preparations to standard treatments for hand dermatitis and eczema, with some reporting comparable improvement in symptom scores over a few weeks.
These are small studies. Part of the topical benefit may simply come from the oil's emollient properties, which can help soften dry skin and reduce moisture loss.

What the evidence doesn't support
This is the section most articles skip, and it's the most useful one.

Cancer. You'll find a great deal online about thymoquinone and cancer. Almost all of it comes from cell cultures and animal studies. Compounds that kill cancer cells in a petri dish are extremely common; compounds that treat cancer in people are extremely rare. There is no human trial evidence that taking black seed oil treats or prevents cancer, and anyone telling you otherwise is either mistaken or selling something less honestly than we are.

Viral infections. Many claims arose during the pandemic. They rest on laboratory work, not clinical outcomes.

Hair regrowth. Black seed oil is a good conditioning oil for the scalp and hair, and there's a small study on stress-related shedding. That's a different thing from regrowing hair in pattern baldness, and it shouldn't be presented as the same thing.

Weight loss. Human trials and pooled analyses have investigated black seed oil for body weight and waist measures, but results are mixed and any effects reported are generally modest. The evidence is not strong enough to consider it an established weight-loss treatment.

Parasites. A perennially popular claim online with essentially nothing behind it in humans.
None of that makes black seed oil useless. It makes it an oil with some interesting research attached, and that is a fair way of putting it, short of a miracle, though considerably more honest than the alternative.

Traditional use, and why it isn't the same as evidence
Black seed has been taken daily across North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia for a very long time. In Islamic tradition, it's called the blessed seed and has a well-known place in prophetic medicine. In Ayurveda and Unani practice, it's been used for centuries.
That history is meaningful cultural context, but long-standing traditional use is not the same as modern evidence of safety or effectiveness at every dose or for every person.
What it doesn't tell you is whether it works for any particular thing. Long use and proven benefit are different claims, and blurring them is how a lot of supplement marketing gets away with saying nothing while sounding authoritative. We'd rather say both parts plainly: it has a long history, and the modern evidence is patchy.
How people actually take it
Two ways, and most people who buy a bottle end up doing both.
Internally, use the amount stated on the product label rather than relying on a universal 'standard dose'. People often take black seed oil straight from the spoon, with honey or in food. If you want to preserve its flavour and heat-sensitive constituents, avoid prolonged high-temperature cooking.

Who should be careful
Black seed oil isn't inert, which is rather the point, and that cuts both ways.

If you take blood thinners such as warfarin, speak to your GP first.

If you take diabetes medication, the same applies. The effects may add up.

If you take blood pressure medication, likewise.

If you're pregnant, avoid taking it internally. If you're breastfeeding, check with a midwife or GP.

If you have surgery planned, tell your GP or surgical team that you take black seed oil and follow their advice on whether and when to stop it.

Using it on your skin? Patch test on the inside of your elbow and wait a full day.
