Ayumi Ayurvedic Shampoo, Rooted in Whole-Plant Cleansing
The right shampoo makes everything else in your routine easier. Pick the wrong one and your hair can feel flat, greasy or dry by the next morning. Each ayurvedic shampoo we make starts with traditional Indian cleansing herbs such as shikakai and aritha (soapnut), then adds herbs chosen for one job: clearing build-up, adding volume or strengthening hair.
Our clarifying shampoo lifts oil and build-up from the roots. Volume & Shine is a lightweight volume shampoo for fine hair, and Growth & Strengthening is our best shampoo for hair growth. If you prefer a completely traditional wash, our Aritha Powder is a natural shampoo you mix with water yourself.
Match Your Hair to the Right Ayurvedic Shampoo
| Your Hair | Our Shampoo | What It Does and How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Oily roots, flakes or product build-up | Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Itchy, Flaky Scalp (250ml) | Our clarifying shampoo, with tea tree, neem, moringa and nettle. It deep-cleans oily roots and lifts away build-up, and in an independent lab test it reduced Malassezia furfur, a yeast linked to dandruff, by 69.7% in vitro. Massage into the scalp for a full minute. Use twice a week. |
| Hair fall, or hair you want to grow stronger | Growth & Strengthening Shampoo (250ml) | Our growth shampoo, with argan, amla, bhringraj, pumpkin seed oil and pro-vitamin B5. Lab tested for hair growth and reduced hair fall. Massage gently into the scalp and rinse. Use twice a week. |
| Fine, flat hair that lacks volume | Volume & Shine Shampoo (250ml) | A lightweight daily volume shampoo with amla, bhringraj, hibiscus, pumpkin seed oil and pro-vitamin B5. It leaves fine hair feeling softer and fuller. Lab tested. Massage into the scalp and roots, work through the lengths and rinse. |
| You want a traditional, single-ingredient wash | Aritha (Soap Nut) Powder for Deep Hair Cleansing (100g) | 100% pure aritha powder, a herbal shampoo used in India for generations and the simplest natural shampoo in our range. It removes excess oil and build-up. Mix 2–3 tablespoons with warm water into a paste, massage into wet hair and scalp, leave for 5–10 minutes and rinse. Use once or twice a week, and keep it away from your eyes. |
Follow each wash with the matching conditioner from our conditioner collection, on the mid-lengths and ends only.
Why Choose an Ayurvedic Shampoo From Us
- Made for one job each. Every ayurvedic shampoo in our range is made for a single concern, so you can choose by what your hair needs.
- Traditional cleansing herbs. Shikakai and aritha are naturally rich in saponins, the plant compounds that make soapnut foam. Aritha has been used as a natural shampoo for centuries, and amla and bhringraj have long been part of Ayurvedic hair care.
- Lab tested. Our clarifying shampoo was lab tested against Malassezia furfur, our growth shampoo was lab tested for hair growth and reduced hair fall, and our volume shampoo is lab tested too.
- For everyone. Every shampoo in our range is unisex, so each works just as well as a shampoo for men as for women.
- PETA certified, vegan and cruelty-free. Every bottle is a PETA certified vegan shampoo and cruelty free shampoo, made in the UK.
How to Choose a Shampoo
If you're wondering how to choose a shampoo, start with your scalp, not your lengths. Shampoo is for cleaning the scalp and roots, so choose it for what's happening there.
- Oily roots or build-up. Choose a clarifying shampoo, such as our Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo.
- Flakes. The same Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is also our best shampoo for dandruff. See our dandruff products for the full routine.
- Hair fall or weak hair. Choose our Growth & Strengthening Shampoo. See our hair loss products and hair growth products for oils and conditioners to go with it.
- Fine or flat hair. Choose a volume shampoo, such as our Volume & Shine Shampoo.
- A more traditional wash. Try a natural shampoo powder such as our Aritha Powder, mixed fresh each time.
Building Your Hair Washing Routine
| Step | How Often | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pre-wash oil (optional) | Once or twice a week | Massage one of our hair oils into the scalp and leave it on before you wash. |
| 2. Shampoo | As your shampoo's label says | Massage your ayurvedic shampoo into the scalp and roots, then rinse thoroughly. If you oiled first, apply shampoo to the oiled hair before adding water. |
| 3. Condition | After every wash | Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, leave for a few minutes and rinse. |
| 4. Dry gently | Every wash | Blot with a towel rather than rubbing, and keep heat styling low. |
What to Look for in an Ayurvedic Shampoo
- A shampoo for your concern. One shampoo rarely suits everything. Choose a clarifying shampoo, a volume shampoo or a growth shampoo depending on what your scalp and hair need.
- Traditional herbs. Look for shikakai, aritha, amla and bhringraj on the ingredient list. They are the backbone of a good ayurvedic shampoo.
- Testing you can check. Our results are on each product page, so you know what each shampoo has been tested for.
- Vegan and cruelty-free. Every vegan shampoo we make is also PETA certified.
Hair Washing in UK Conditions
- Hard water. Much of England has hard water. Rinse thoroughly after shampooing and conditioning so nothing is left on the hair.
- Winter. Central heating dries hair out from October to March. A weekly pre-wash oil before your ayurvedic shampoo helps hair feel softer.
- Flakes in winter. If flakes appear in the colder months, switch to our Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo until they settle.
