Ayumi Ayurvedic Care for Dandruff
Dandruff has nothing to do with being unclean. Those white flakes in hair and on your shoulders are mostly linked to Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's scalp and feeds on its natural oil. In some people Malassezia speeds up the way the scalp sheds, and the result is dandruff flakes that keep coming back.
Our dandruff products make a simple dandruff treatment routine, built around neem and tea tree, two plants with a long history in scalp care. The Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is our anti dandruff shampoo, the Anti-Dandruff Scalp Conditioner is our anti dandruff conditioner, and the Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is our clinically proven dandruff oil. All three have been tested in a lab against Malassezia furfur. If you prefer a single ingredient, our neem oil and organic neem oil complete the range.
What Causes Dandruff?
Knowing what causes dandruff makes it much easier to choose the right dandruff treatment. These are the most common dandruff causes, and most people have more than one.
- Scalp yeast. Malassezia lives on every scalp. In some people Malassezia multiplies, feeds on the scalp's oil and speeds up skin shedding. That is why you'll sometimes hear it called fungal dandruff.
- An oily scalp. The more oil your scalp makes, the more there is for Malassezia to feed on, so dandruff often goes hand in hand with greasy roots. See our oily scalp products if that sounds familiar.
- Hormones and genes. Oil production rises during puberty and pregnancy, and some people are simply more prone to dandruff than others.
- Product build-up. Styling products and conditioner left on the scalp can trap flakes and make them more noticeable.
- Stress and the seasons. Many people find their dandruff flares up when they are stressed, and gets worse from October to March.
- Dry scalp, not dandruff. Small, dry, white flakes and a tight scalp usually point to dryness, not Malassezia. Our dry scalp products are made for that, and our itchy scalp products help when itching is the main problem.
- When to see your GP. If your scalp is red, sore or has raised, scaly patches, it may be a skin condition rather than ordinary dandruff. See your GP or a trichologist.

Why Choose Our Dandruff Products
- Tested against the yeast. Our Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil is clinically proven, and it reduced Malassezia furfur by 99.73% in vitro in an independent lab test. Our Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Anti-Dandruff Scalp Conditioner were lab tested against Malassezia furfur too.
- A pre-wash step. Oiling the scalp before washing has been part of Ayurvedic hair care for centuries. Our Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil brings that step into a modern anti dandruff treatment routine.
- A conditioner you can use. Our anti dandruff conditioner is light enough for greasy hair. It goes on the lengths only, so nothing heavy sits at the roots.
- Neem in every product. From the neem shampoo to the pure neem oils, all five products in our dandruff range contain neem.
- PETA certified, vegan and cruelty-free. Every product in our dandruff range is PETA certified, vegan, cruelty-free and made in the UK.
Dandruff Remedies: How to Look After Your Scalp
Good dandruff remedies are mostly about routine. These simple habits work alongside any dandruff shampoo.
- Oil before you wash. Massage the Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil into your scalp, leave it for at least 30 minutes, then wash it out. For stubborn flaking, leave it on overnight.
- Massage, don't scratch. Work your anti dandruff shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails, for a full minute.
- Keep conditioner off the roots. Apply your anti dandruff conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends.
- Rinse well. Make sure no shampoo, conditioner or styling product is left on the scalp.
- Stick with one routine. Swapping between dandruff products every week makes it hard to know what works. Give one routine several weeks.
Building a Dandruff Treatment Routine
| Step | How Often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pre-wash dandruff oil: Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil | Two to three times a week | Massage into the scalp for five minutes and leave for at least 30 minutes, or overnight. This is the oil that reduced Malassezia furfur by 99.73% in vitro in an independent lab test. |
| 2. Wash with the Clarifying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo | Twice a week | Massage into the scalp for a full minute, then rinse thoroughly. |
| 3. Condition with the Anti-Dandruff Scalp Conditioner | Twice a week, after the shampoo | Mid-lengths to ends only, for 2–5 minutes. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water. |
| 4. Optional: pure neem oil | Now and then | Mix a few drops with a carrier oil and massage into the scalp before washing. Never apply it neat. |
| 5. Keep going | Several weeks | Dandruff takes time to settle, so give the routine several weeks before you judge the results. |
How to Choose a Good Anti Dandruff Shampoo
- Tested against Malassezia. A good anti dandruff shampoo should be tested against Malassezia furfur, the yeast linked to dandruff. Look for the results on the product page, as ours are.
- Herbs with a track record. Neem and tea tree are two of the best-known natural ingredients for scalp care. An ayurvedic anti dandruff shampoo that uses both, like ours, is a good natural dandruff shampoo to start with.
- A pre-wash oil as well. For persistent dandruff, an anti dandruff hair oil used before washing adds a step that a dandruff shampoo on its own can't.
- A light conditioner. Choose a dandruff conditioner made for the lengths, so nothing heavy sits on the scalp.
- Realistic claims. Any dandruff treatment can keep flakes under control, but because Malassezia is always on the scalp, dandruff tends to come back if you stop. Keep using the products that work for you.
Dandruff Care for UK Conditions
- Winter. Many people find dandruff gets worse from October to March. Use the Anti-Dandruff Scalp Oil three times a week through the colder months.
- Hard water. In hard-water areas, rinse thoroughly so no product residue is left on the scalp.
- Hats and scarves. Wash winter hats and scarves regularly, as they collect oil, sweat and flakes.
